ARTIST NOTES: With a rich aboriginal history and located east of Broken Hill, Kinchega National Park is home to the Menindee Lakes. The park is a habitat for more than 230 bird species and around 500 plant species. The health of the water within the park is pivotal to the effective management of the Murray Darling Basin.
I have chosen to depict this landscape in ways that deliberately amplify the local colours, textures and flora diversity. Within that I have used abstract styles and techniques to celebrate nature’s resilience and its ability to quickly reshape and reorganize its character.
I have specifically used the waterway to depict an aboriginal spirituality of the Paakantji/Barkindji people whose presence goes back more than 10,000 years, and who used the rivers as important sources of food.
The images have been assembled through direct observation and subsequent recollections and imagining. To enhance the abstract interpretations, I have used a specific flower = the yellow and lilac Menindee Nightshade to demonstrate the park’s floral beauty.
I hope to encourage people to explore the park and its aboriginal history.
