ARTIST BIO

Charles was born in 1947 and spent his early childhood in country Victoria, before moving to Geelong, where he still resides today. his art has been greatly influenced by the three years he spent travelling overseas in the early 1970s, where he travelled from London, around Europe to the Middle East, India and Asia.

Upon his return to Australia, he began studying art seriously, and by the 1980s had become a successful artist, exhibiting in many galleries around Australia, as well as Paris and London.

Charles has been a full-time Artist since 1991, winning numerous awards both in Victoria and interestate. His work is highly after in Australia and overseas, having had a number of one-man shows and group exhibitions over the years.

Charles is a member of the Old Water Colour Society, as well as the Geelong Art Society, where he is a popular tutor, teaching in the mediums of oil, acrylic, watercolour and pastel.

His work generates vibrant colour and atmosphere, which emanates from his varied streetscapes, to his bold depictions of outback panoramas, while his watercolours are softer and convey a subtleness of atmosphere.

This quote from a letter to Pissarro sent to his son Lucien, sums up Charles' philosophy to painting:

"Happy are those who see beautiful things in modest surroundings or where others see nothing. Everything is beautiful, all that matters is to know how to interpret it.."
